PA:
Bonjour Natalise. How is it going with you? What have you
been up to lately?
Natalise:
Things are good, just been really busy! I've been writing a
whole bunch for my third album and also possibly for other
artists. I'm also in the process of putting together a fall
club and college tour, so I'm excited about that!
PA:
Who were your main musical influences growing up as a child
and/or teenager? What about today?
Natalise:
Growing up, I loved Brian McKnight, Janet Jackson, and
Madonna. In the house, my parents always played the Beatles
and the BeeGees...oh, and ABBA! So I'm sure those groups
influenced some of my music and general music taste as
well. These days, I am inspired and influenced by anything I
hear that I like -- I love so many different things: Coldplay,
Missy Elliot, NERD, Christina Aguilera, Jason Mraz, John
Mayer, etc. But I guess when it comes down to it, I just
like what's good!
PA:
When did you find out that you wanted to make music your
career?
Natalise:
I've always wanted to make a career out of music - I just
never thought I could. I grew up in a family that was very
musical, yet nobody really pursued a career in it, so even
though I had played piano since I was three I never really
thought twice about it. But I think in high school I got bit
by the music biz bug!
PA:
How do you go about writing a song? How do you get
inspired?
Natalise:
I'm inspired by my personal experiences. You know it's crazy
because I know of songwriters who just sit down and write
songs about whatever. They'll come up with a topic randomly
and just try to write something. For me, it's not like that.
When a song comes, it just comes...and it's usually fueled
by something that JUST happened. Songwriting is my way of
venting or saying something that I haven't said in real
life.
PA:
You are a graduate of Stanford university (one of most
prestigious school in America) and you were an A student, do
you ever think about quitting the world of music and going
back to a regular 9 to 5 job?
Natalise:
No, I would never do a 9 to 5 job. It's just not for me. In
college I had this internship where I sat in front of a
computer all day. The people were really cool, but even
then, I just couldn't stand it. I got restless and bored. I
couldn't wait to go home to play piano or sing. I think my
favorite part of those days was driving home in rush hour
traffic because at least then I could sing!
PA:
Dodge has decided to choose your track "Get me off" from
your new album "I came to play" to be used for their
national promotion campaign to reintroduce their all-new
Dodge Charger. This must have been great exposure for your
music. How did this happen?
Natalise:
That deal just sort of came out of nowhere. I wasn't there
when it happened, but apparently some guy (who makes a lot
of decisions) :) listened to the song and it really grew on
him! The next day, I got a call!
PA: In your opinion, is America finally
ready to accept a "Queen of Music" who happens to be of
asian origin?
Natalise:
You know, I hope so. I think America has, over the years,
seen an increasing number of people of different ethnicities
that are culturally American, especially on networks like
MTV and reality programming on FOX and ABC, etc. I think
there is a wider acceptance that American does not equate to
White. I would hope that America would not stay ignorant
about the diversity of its country, championing people for
the personal AND cultural richness they bring.
PA:
What other artists would you like to collaborate the most
with?
Natalise: I
would love to collaborate with the Neptunes, Brian McKnight,
and Janet Jackson. I lived vacariously through Justin
Timberlake when he made his first solo album!
PA: Are you somewhat familiar with the
european music scene? Would you be interested in giving
concerts in countries like France or Italy?
Natalise:
To be honest, I don't know enough about the European music
scene. I only know that Coldplay is from England :) ....and
Craig David and Robbie WIlliams...and Daniel Bedingfield?
and Natasha Bedingfield? :) You know, it would be a DREAM
come true to perform in France and Italy. I took Italian for
two years in college and I am in love with the language. I
have wanted to go to Italy and then take a train all across
Europe. That would be amazing! To perform all
across Europe -- that would be the cherry on top! I'd love
it!
PA: You can play music, you can sing, you
can dance and you are smart and beautiful? Is there anything
that you don't know or can't do?
Natalise:
Lol. You're funny. :) Umm, I can't roll my "R's" for a long
time. I can only do it in when I use it within a word, but I
can't do it where it lasts for 10 seconds. :) Off-stage, I
am a big klutz. I once ran into a fire hydrant while
running. I had a bruise the size of a softball below my
kneecap for like a month!
PA: Merci for your time and the best luck
to you Natalise.
Natalise:
Thank you so much!!! I hope to have the pleasure of coming
out to Europe soon - that would be awesome! Please tell your
